Triple MMM .... for SALE!

Well, just in case no one noticed, I've not been posting or lurking in forums or on the list. I've been more than busy... Ama, Leslie, and Jay arrived in Eugene (OR) this past Friday, having taken a few days to drive and stopping to visit Matt Suhr in Ashland (among other friends). I meanwhile, spent the week cleaning up and emptying the Casita -- my 'little house' so housemate Randy could relocate back there. Big thanks to Suean and Etta for helping with the cleaning and sorting and fo… Continue

The Colonel...

Just heard that a couple of friends have started referring to me as 'the Colonel' for my chickens -- or at least the eggs. Raising backyard chickens is about the easiest thing one can do to start homesteading, weather your goal is just to add an easy staple to your diet or as part of a plan for a fully permaculture-inspired system. We have 12 and 1/2 hens at the Triple MMM House right now. I say 1/2 because there's still a 50 - 50 chance that one of our hens is a rooster... :) He's got the tail… Continue

17th street and glendale - right on the corner. My soil is pure rock - it's awful - thank goodness for compost! I'm really excited - I have so much to learn.

I would like to see information on keeping chickens in an urban environment and combining chicken keeping with gardening. Also preventing odors and noise problems when there is limited space and neighbors are close. Most of my neighbors love my chickens. They come to visit bringing vegetable scraps. Most are elderly and one woman commented that the happy sounds my hens make are a sound from her childhood. One has expressed concerns about barnyard odors and noises. This has not become a problem but I want to be sure it doesn't. Because of my lack of much space, I use the "deep mulch system" described in the book "Chicken Tractor".
