That is great info! Thanks for the reference. It makes sense that over the course of 700 some years the soil could get over salinated here. I know we all struggle with the salinity of our soil and the water arriving via canal. By the time the canal water reaches Phoenix much of the water has evaporated leaving behind excess minerals.
You may not know that Dan and I are originally from MN, and attended the U of MN in Minneapolis. How is permaculture doing in the upper Midwest? I left the state going on 7 years ago and moved to OC CA and then here in Phoenix for the last year and a half. So far I really like Phoenix more than either the Twin Cities or the OC. I really struggled with the lack of sunshine over the winters back home, but couldn't stand the materialistic nature of the OC. At least sunshine isn’t a problem here, and the people are a little more grounded!
I hadn’t seen your blog before, I’ll start looking though it! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it,
Hi Daniel - I took a look at your blog - nice work! I had to laugh when I read your post on drip irrigation. Living here in the desert we use a LOT of drip irrigation. It surprises me a little to see you all using it in MN. I went to college in Madison, WI and had an extensive garden there (oh, how easy it was to grow things.....anything....in Madison!!) and rarely did we have to irrigate anything there was so much water. Here in Phoenix, we're lucky to get 7-8 inches per year and most of that falls in July-Aug and Dec-Feb. Other times we have to rely on cached rainwater in our soil, in cisterns, harvested graywater and making do with plants that are not water hogs. This has led to some unusual food changes.
I'll be interested to follow your journey - looks like you have a beautiful property!
