Phoenix Urban Forestry - Trees for residences and pulbic spaces

I have taken advantage of this program in the past and found it to be pretty cool. Before I moved in, my neighborhood did a "Re-leaf" program and planted hundreds of Urban Forestry trees in the right-of-ways between the sidewalk and the street.

See: http://phoenix.gov/FORESTRY/#GUIDE

Guidelines for Tree Planting Requests
Project must provide environmental and sociological benefits to the community.

Priority will be given to school-age children and their support groups (Parent Teacher Associations, Boy/Girl Scouts, Camp Fire, etc.). Community groups and citizens working to improve their neighborhoods through the planting of trees are encouraged to apply.

The City will provide trees to be planted on public properties (right-of-way, schools, etc.) Trees will be tagged with identifying number for audit purposes. Tags should remain on trees a minimum of three years.

Applicant will be responsible for the payment of half the cost of the tree(s). There is a monetary limit of $2,000 per application ($1,000 from the applicant and $1,000 from Phoenix Urban Forestry).

Application will be reviewed for acceptance and no funds will be accepted before right of way and locations of underground utilities are established. Do not send any money until you are notified that your application has been approved.

Individuals or groups requesting trees are responsible for the care of the trees.

If trees are provided, the recipient must notify Phoenix Urban Forestry if the tree is damaged, appears to have problems of any kind, is vandalized, etc. Recipient will be responsible for the total cost of the tree if any of the above are discovered during the monitoring process and Phoenix Urban Forestry has not been notified.

The Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to make the final determination on all applications.
In addition to the tree-planting program, Phoenix Urban Forestry sponsors programs for school-age children about the benefits of trees. Educational materials are available on request to adults about planting, care and maintenance of trees or through the libraries where special racks with tree information rotate between branch libraries. Please call 602 495-3763 to determine the current location of the racks.

Dear Phoenix Resident:
Phoenix Urban Forestry is accepting requests for trees to be planted on public property. The program encourages the planting of trees throughout the Phoenix area to add to the quality of life and to the beauty and character of the City, to improve air quality by filtering dust and pollutants, and to reduce energy costs by providing shade to homes.
Prior to submitting your application for trees, please consider carefully the type of tree needed, the care the tree will need, how it will fit into the surrounding terrain, and the placement of the tree in relationship to overhead and underground utility lines. A "List of Trees" that we recommend is enclosed, as well as the "Guide to Arizona Desert Shade Trees" brochure.

Please complete the enclosed Application for trees and return to Phoenix Urban Forestry Coordinator, 1802 W. Encanto Blvd., Phoenix, AZ 85007. Requests will be evaluated on the basis of meeting the Guidelines for Tree Proposals on the back of this letter.

If the Application is approved, Phoenix Urban Forestry will provide trees for the applicant to plant on public property, i.e., the right-of-way in front of your residence, schools, parks, etc., with the cost shared between the applicant and the City of Phoenix. Our approximate cost for a 15-gallon tree is $24.00, $12.00 from the City and $12.00 from the applicant. A 24 -inch box tree costs approximately $90.00, $45.00 from the City and $45.00 from the applicant. Some species may cost more; in this event you will be notified of actual cost. Do not send any money until you are notified that your Application has been approved.

If you have any questions or if I can be of help, please call me at602-495-3763. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Susan Pleger, Coordinator
Phoenix Urban Forestry

Susie is so fun to work with too! If you do a school program you should most definately check out some of the Urban Forestry programs and suit up as Blossom for an event. I had so much fun and the children really loved it!
