Sustainable Homeless Campus?

Want to help the homeless of Phoenix through gardening, designing, harvesting water, etc.? I work at the Human Services Campus, which is actively seeking to become more sustainable, recognizing the link between our carbon footprint and poverty. If anyone is interested in lending their expertise (or just creative energy!) to this, please contact me for more details.

** Update - Several of us will be meeting to tour the Human Services on Tuesday, July 1st at 8:00am. Please come if you'd like to explore the possibilities - no commitment needed at this point! I look forward to seeing what takes shape - and will provide updates to this discussion board as things develop.

** Update #2: Thanks to all who have expressed interest and/or come to the Campus for a tour and to check out the lay of the land. So far, we've been brainstorming and the Campus leadership is open to having some Permaculture Design courses at the site. There is much more to discuss and plan. Please contact Myron if you'd like to get involved - he is taking the lead on this project. I have a great feeling about the future of the Campus!

Hi Blue:

What a fantastic project! Can you tell me where the Campus is located?

12th Ave. and Jackson St. If you want to know about St. Joseph the Worker, the agency on the Campus that I work for, you can visit www.sjwjobs.org - there's a map and directions on the 'Contact Us' page.

Thanks so much for your interest - I look forward to being a part of whatever develops here!

Hey Blue,
I can offer an initial walkabout on the project and help decide where the best place would be for the Veggie Garden. Beyond that at the moment, will have to wait.
So between now and september we need to set up a meet with all concerned.

It might be possible for me to attend the 7/1 meeting but would be in gardening work clothes.
what is intent of meeting (re garden) - importance of my showing up?

Don

I would love to help out in a "limited" fashion. ie. I'd like more info re: location, timeline, and energy force behind making the "design" a reality.
Please let me know more specifics about the July 1 meeting, time/location. Thanks

Blue,
I echo these sentiments and I would like to help. More details on the July 1st meeting please.

I'm so grateful for so much interest in this!

I have to say that I don't think that the meeting on the 1st is of central importance.

I'd really just like to get some input and I see the September volunteers as only one possible way (of many!) to put ideas into action. There is definitely support for 'sustainability' projects and teaching here, so I'd love to get together with you all, look at the space and get creative!

I'm open to meeting with folks anytime, preferably during the week. Let me know when will work for you.

Thanks!

HI Blue - (maybe we should call you GREEN for this project :-)).

I would also be interetsed in being part of this project, but will need to know time commitment, etc.

I cannot attend the meeting on July 1, but echo Don's idea of getting this group together.

Hi Blue
i'm jumping into this thread kinda late, please enlighten us on details from 7/1 mtg. Was anything vitally important decided?
Also interested in volunteering in this most worthy cause!
Since i work just a few blocks away @ AZ Supreme Court bldg (15th Ave & Jefferson), let me know if you ever need anything done ASAP, or just want to meet up for lunch sometime -- perhaps at the Olde Station? :)

p.s. - b4 we start a diggin' & plantin' a garden, we should think about issues re: water supply! How's the building's roof drainage set for gutters & downspouts, where does the new cistern tank(s) need to go, and the bigger hurdle -- what's management's & the city official's stated perspective about these paths towards sustainability?
