Winter and spring crops are going to seed.  Broccoli, quinoa, arugula, and chard seeds have been harvested and are drying, but romaine lettuce, parsley and orach seeds are still maturing.

We save lettuce seed too - red romaine, black-seeded simpson, and red oak leaf. Also, lacinato kale, collards swiss chard, basil, arugula, and others. The biggest surprise and treat this year was letting the radicchio (red treviso) go to seed this year - the flowers are really pretty, like large purple aster flowers, not like lettuce at all. We love that letting so much go to flower brings in lots of native bee types as well as non-native honeybees.

Wow!  Nice pictures.  What is orach?  I've saved lots of dill seed, bachelor buttons, broccoli and Thai basil.

I love watching plants seed!  I have lettuce ( just beginning to dry) and basil (already making new seedlings)  and  I saved all my cilantro seeds (coriander) a month ago.  Several of my annual flowers have dropped seed and are starting on a second generation of prettiness. I am hoping to save my melon and squash seeds, pending they mature, and I might try saving tomato seeds this year... if I feel brave. I might just let a few rot in the bed and see what happens.  Volunteers are wonderful  :-)
