Phoenix Chicken Laws

That's GREAT news! We are in Phoenix, with a Glendale mailing address...we have city of PHX services. I guess I should whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies and go chat with my lovely neighbors!…

Phoenix Chicken Laws

I'm getting mixed messages about whether I can have chickens in Phoenix. I live at 43 Ave and Pinnacle Peak. Does anyone know for sure if I can have some hens in my back yard? I'd appreciate any inpu…

Amen, Rachel!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I have two golf balls in the boxes now (see pic #1) so maybe that will help. At least the urn isn't inconvenient to collect from!

We wanted to show the kiddos the difference between homegrown, organic eggs and store bought caged eggs.

Try putting a golf ball in the nesting box. Actually, the urn looks a lot more convenient for egg collecting.

My Barred Rock layed her first egg in a nest box, and the next four she layed in an empty urn. Any thoughts or experience with this behavior?

If fully feathered out and have some sort of shelter from the wind and rain, then no. Around Christmas, when it got so darn cold at night, I put a heat lamp out for my meaties. They were fully feathered, but are housed in a mobile pen that doesn't…

Hello, for the best answer to this question check out Robert Plamodoms web site. He offers so much info on raising chickens. I live North of PHX temps here are 28-30 or lower. I shut my chickens in till I read some of the articles on Roberts page. I…

Thanks, Chris! This helps ease my mind and confirms what my instincts were telling me, but still needed to hear since I'm still new to this! Happy New Year!

I'm just wondering if I need to worry about my chickens staying warm enough with these cold temps. I'm in NW Phoenix and the girls are now 3.5 months old. Do you think they need a lamp? I'd love any input. Thanks much!

Thanks to you all for your pictures and advice! I love the looks of the Catawba, but went with a coop, instead, because I felt it would be a bit too cramped. So far, so good! I'd love to see your pictures, though, Dennis! :)

My roots go back to wonderful farm memories of eating fresh raspberries, gathering dinner from the garden and bringing in the eggs from the hen house. We've been on hiatus from gardening and are diving back in the urban agriculture pool with a few chicks and gardening by the foot.

I am not sure about PHX chicken laws. Here is a discussion on this site about that. Rachel would know, she has a small flock in PHX. You could contact her via her "my Page"

Your info says that you are in Glendale, totally different than PHX. Seems like someone on this site lives in Glendale too and was trying to figure out how they could keep chickens. Here is a link to that discussion. I live in Scottsdale, which surprisingly has one of the most lenient codes in the valley-go figure!

Here is a link to a search tool for Mastergardeners. It will not tell you if the fruit is edible, but it does say what type of wildlife it will attract. These plants also have the benefit of being desert adapted, so you are not spending a ton of mon…
