Just pine, off the shelf, no ripping as the instructions say to. I keep meaning to paint or seal it, but I am too busy. It has held up pretty well though. It was kind of a bitch to build, there may be more simple designs out there. If you are ever in the neighborhood, you are welcome to come take a look anytime. I am around 7th avenue and Glendale.
