I have planters in my yard and am in the process of changing out the soil. while digging I found lots of these little buggers (1 or 2 per shovel full in the upper foot of soil) The ducks love them :)…

Looks like a fungus of some sort. If your plants seemed OK, then I would assume that the fungus is OK to have. So many fungus amongus.

I'm not sure, but they sound like the larvae for June Bugs (Beetles) called White Grubs..here's a link to the Master gardener site describing em.. http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/entomology/turf.html#root

Yes as you dig remove them as you did for duck Sushi They are refered to as White Grubs and eat roots
