Dang, Ericka, those do sound like my beetley things. I have seen tiny eggs as you describe; I felt they were kind of coppery in color almost, and they were just the size you say. I did smush them, hoping that they were a naughty bug vs. a beneficial…

Squash bugs can cause the yellowing of leaves as well. Right now I have a new batch of the buggers in my Big Cheese (winter squash-basically a native pumpkin) and they start attacking when your plant begins to female flower, which is starting with a…

Jane, regarding the "beetley" things....are they the little beetles that I have been calling pill bugs? I have literally millions of them, everywhere in my gardens, especially under my water buckets, but they come pouring out of the soil when I dig.…

My butternuts are doing the same thing, although I have several fruit growing. At the beginning of the summer I had a couple really good size squash, then nothing until the last month, then several squash and I have new, green leaves starting. I thi…

I think I bought my PattyPans from Botanical Interests as well - although it was a volunteer, I do know I bought PattyPans and tried to plant them earlier this year. It was way late though, after the heat had already started. Maybe they hung out for…

OK. So my variety is from Botanical Interests -- the Early Yollow Crookneck "Cucurbita pepo" heirloom. In Spring it did produce prolifically for a month or so and then die off -- perhaps it has a short lifecycle.

i appreciate this thread...as i've experienced the same thing (chris - out in our new field)....my squash are turning yellow and dying, however most of our pumpkin seem happy. i confess that i forgot to turn water off and flooded my area a few times…

I do hope you get tons of squash, Scott! I too had a problem with the yellow leaves and wilt, then death, of a couple of volunteer Patty Pan squash I had in one area and then a volunteer whose identity appeared to be a melon of some type in a comple…

Interesting! The fact pattern you mention is precisely what happended this Spring. I was concerned because these young guys are showing early signs of dull leaf color already (no yellow yet), but were just planted from seed last month. Hopefully the…

Thanks Chris. They are crookneck summer squash. In July, before adding anything, the Ph was a bit north of 8.0 (hard to tell precisely how high with the color readings). I have not yet tested it again as the kits are a bit expensive -- figured I wou…

Help.  I am having a recurring problem with my yellow squash plants.  They start out with nice dark green leaves, but one-by-one the leaves start to turn gray/green and then yellow and then dead.   I did a soil analysis in July and found the followi…

I may be interested. Let me think about whether I can handle that much (already have my own compost pile). It's great to see that you are taking the time to chip and compost this material. So much yard waste goes to the landfill. Even though they h…

I haven't tried honeydew, but with my cantaloupe I have found that they easily pull from the stem when ripe (no cutting required). Hope that helps -- the plants look so healthy.

I have grown serrano chilies (which are similar to jalapenos) and picked them within a few days of the fruits appearing. Seems they quit growing any larger after just a few days. Ones left on the plant longer either became a touch shriveled or chang…

Thanks so much. Great information. I'm glad I don't have to start picking them off.

Thanks---I saw one of these on my Anna apple tree yesterday and wondered what it was! BTW, set two apples this year, I go look at them and say encouraging things every day : woo-hoo! Jennifer S.

Going for a healthier diet.

I have decided to try aspects of a Vegan diet and want to share my experiences here to help keep me on the path. It has been one week and I think I am getting the hang of it.

So here's my parameters -- this isn't necessarily a "by-the-book" vegan diet -- I'm making up some of my own rules to fit the lifestyle I am trying to achieve.

- Minimal to no meat products or meat bi-products.
- Minimal to no processed foods, within reason.
- Minimal caffeine (just because).
- Organic when available (try… Continue

Hi all- I would like to order some Cornish X next week, but would prefer to have my mother in law raise them in Prescott rather than in Phx.  Anyone know how Cornish X will do in cooler weather up in Prescott?    Jay

So I cooked the first of the rabbits we processed last week. Fried it like chicken. What went wrong is I have never fried chicken and I cooked it too long resulting in rubber rabbit so I popped it into the crockpot for three hours and it was divine…

I was just reviewing John Jeavon's book How to Grow More Vegetables and in it he mentions planting Mexican marigold (Tagetes minuta) for controlling nematodes.
