A baby's a baby's a baby

Last night at the end of the day, about 8 pm, I took off my headphones and was about to put them up when I noticed something sticking out past the edge of the top band and turned the headphones so see a tiny little lizard perched on the top band. It must have been there, or somewhere on me, for hours. I took the headphones outside and tried to get it to walk off onto various vines and things, but no go. I gently picked it off the headphones and it promptly settled down onto my index finger, clos… Continue

List of species and varieties of seeds stored in mass bin used for Seedball Class.

Here is a list of the seeds placed in the seed bin used for seedball class. Many, although not all, are identified by common ame, and binomial genus-species names. I continue to work on making the names complete, especially since so many of you have heard me rant about identifying plants by common name alone. Not fussy, it's just that people have been made ill and killed by misunderstood common names. I will be grateful too any fellow permies who want to help with this. They and are invited to w… Continue

Hi Ruby,

My name is Lisa von Koch, and I am a friend of Julie Anands. I am the TA for the Systems, Art and Ecology course, and I know that you are going to come in and show us how to make seed bombs. I was wondering if you might be able to pass along your recipe and instructions, as I am going to a residency in Tennessee in October, and would like to do something with seed bombs there.

Thank you so much!

Ruby,
Thanks for all your information on lasagna gardening, fungus, and everything else I asked at the Arizona Earth Day at First United Methodist Church booth.

Hi, Ruby. It was such a pleasure to meet you and share this morning with you. I hope that we can get together soon to talk about our comon interests!
I have signed up for the next seedball class at any rate, so can see you then.

Did you happen to find my metal waterbottle? I think that I left it at the booth when I left today at noon. If so, can you please let me know? It is steel with the words HOT and COLD artfully strewn around the surface.

Thanks for a lovely morning.......Barbara

ruby,
thank you so much for the advice. the basil seeds are indeed dry and ready to let go of the seeds ( i think they have already begun to let go on their own and i should have a nice crop of little volunteer basil plants soon, haha) however, there are still many for me to collect and my method was crunching them up on a white glass dish , and when trying to shake the plate slightly they all just kind of went with the chaff, at which point i tried to gently blow on the chaff which resulted in me blowing some of my seeds away. i finally resorted to crunching them and then picking them out 1 at a time, which is way more time than i wanted to spend on that particular task, it did have kind of a meditative quality about it, but i figure i'm not going to end up with a very big selection of seeds, spending hours on just basil seeds, haha.
i am also blessed with the cheap gene, and the repurpose/reuse gene so i'm going to try and keep an eye out for some old strainers at the thrift shops. i did buy a gravy seperator at the $1 store today in hopes that i may be able to use it for some type of seed collecting. i hadn't put much thought to the electrostatic qualities of different types of materials, so i'm thinking the next chance i get, i may try some plastic to see if it holds onto the chaff a little better. thank you so much for your very detailed response and i will let you know about my progress as soon as i have a chance to collect more seeds.
thanks ruby!

ruby,
got any secret methods for collecting basil seeds? (just the seed, without all the plant material?) i spent about 1 1/2 hours trying to get just seeds and am hoping there's an easier way than trying to pick them all out 1 at a time. tried blowing the crunched up plant material, but seeds moved with it. any info you can give, i'd appreciate.
thank you =)

Hi I met you at the booth for the light rail opening and we happen to live a few blocks from each other. I'd love to visit your home and see what you do (I saw the photos on your website) as I mainly have rocks and bermuda still at my own. Are you going to the Science Cafe tomorrow at East-West Exchange?
