- I am a recent transplant from Indiana and have yet to grow anything besides houseplants and my cat since arriving in the fall.
I feel like I have a lot to learn about the desert, our growing seasons, and that thing you call cleachy. Like most in this group, I enjoy gardening and look forward to settling in.

Help me ditch the Bermuda
Much as I wanted to attend last week's program on this topic, I was unable to do so at the last minute. So, I'd like to ask those who did or are already "in-the-know", if you would share some bullets of what to do when.
I close on a house this week and the lawn has been established some 30+years. Thatch is obvious and pushing up the front walkway. I'd be much ablidged. Thanks.

Finding a Permi Home in the Valley
I'm new to Phoenix and now that I've sold my house in IN, I hope to buy in next few months. I'm looking for tips from folks who've been around awhile and know the 'pulse' of the Valley. Areas to avoid or consider inside the 101, probably more Central - with or without flood irrigation. A quiet haven , under 170,000.
Name of honest, like-minded realitor, would be great also.

Dana said… - Welcome to AZ! Indeed I do still consider myself a beginning gardener...moving toward improving as now I don't kill everything I plant. My husband helps me a great deal. We moved here from upstate NY 9 1/2 years ago but I'm originally from CA. I have the same interests you mentioned. I'm thinking about joining the next Permaculture training. I attend some of the classes on Sat. and hope we can meet up there. I live in NW Phoenix off Happy Valley and I-17. I agree with the compost tip below - I do same things but dig it in around yard and in one big pile. I cover it and it turns into compost real quick. See you soon!

I should have gone with raised beds as I bought lots of vegetable seeds in Sept. I was optomistic that the caliche wouldn't be as bad in the back garden as out front, but it was a tedious chore to break up and then to sift it out, move it to the desert side where it is useful for my rain water harvesting project by creating swales and berms with it. I am just getting ready to plant a bunch of greens my favorite is Swiss Chard "Bight Lights" it is almost too pretty to eat, plus it shrinks a lot when you cook it, as well as Kale, Spinach, Lettuces and a whole bunch of stuff. A roommate that gardens would be ideal, are you currently renting a place? Chris

- Welcome to Arizona, once you settle in you will love it. A roommate who has taken the "Designing a Vegetable Garden" is the type of person I am looking for, that's why I put a notice on this site, rather leary of posting on craigslist . I hope to find someone who would appreciate this place. I love cats, but there are big hawks, some huge owls and coyotes wander thru once in awhile, so it is a gamble having them or small dogs. Call me sometime and I will give you a garden tour. Chris

So I cooked the first of the rabbits we processed last week. Fried it like chicken. What went wrong is I have never fried chicken and I cooked it too long resulting in rubber rabbit so I popped it into the crockpot for three hours and it was divine…
