Thoughts on goats and chickens together?

I used to keep mini-sheep in central phoenix. You sound experienced, but If anyone else is considering it, the mini-cheviots are great, or you could try the finn breed: they also have relatively bare…

What exactly is the time commitment? I would like to do this, but I already work pretty long hours. What is the schedule lkie?

Thank you for your response. It is good to know it wasn't just me, or me not spending enough time hand raising the little buggers. I keep them for eggs production, and spent some time handling them a…

Wow , after reading these posts I am feeling lucky ! We have not had any lull in egg producing , it has been steady since they started laying in summer. Are hens get the yard during the day and go to the coop on their own they have veggie and grain…

There's a BIG difference between adding light to a hen house that's totally enclosed (commercial barn) vs adding light to chickens that can actually see it being dark. I've been through the same things with our horses as most breeders put their mare…

I recommend you plan for NO cleaning by by doing the deep litter method. You dig it out once or twice a year. I have been doing it this way for a long time. I do have a roof on the area, and shelter on three sides, so that the floor does not flood w…

Good advice on working to preserve them when you have a surplus. Another great way to preserve eggs is to make egg noodles! Yummy! We do not use artificial lighting for our layers..it just doesn't sit well with me. If you aren't getting enough eggs…

I hear you on that. No one with chickens ever wants to have to buy eggs! One thing you can do is freeze the eggs when you have surplus. Crack a bunch into a bowl, stir to break up the yolks, and pour into ice cube trays. :)

I think I will pass on the pecan leaves, just because we are going to be using our compost for spring plants and I want the kids to experience sucess with this, even though failure in this case would be educational. I might try it myself though. Cou…

Next Thursday would be great. I will call you before then to arrang the details. Thanks you!

I just hate having to buy eggs during the slow down, but for now I have decided against the extra light. I don't need the eggs as much as the hens need the rest. I could use a little rest myself: I have been busy helping with the new coop project, a…

I will second (or third) the recommendation to not artificially light your birds. If you're running a production house where the output is more important than the health of the birds that's one thing, but in backyard flocks in a permaculture sort of…

Our queen hen is pretty consistent and lays every other day. Out littlest one has stopped laying for about a month now and is molting. While man kind can force nature to do many things, it is the natural cycle of the chicken, and those ladies deserv…

Egg laying takes tremendous energy. Forcing them to lay all year stresses their bodies. If you let the birds have their natural resting/molting periods, they will lay for many more months overall and have less health issues. You can only get so many…

Your birds deserve their winter rest - just eat less eggs in darker months. By using light to 'force' them to lay, you're depriving them of the natural cycle that is part of their physical health pattern. I will totally admit to having used a light…

After reading the discussion of using red for heat lamps, I got to wondering about th lighting I want to add for the egg layers. They need 14-15 hrs a day to keep laying in winter. I was thinking of putting in a 4 ft florescent fixture with soft or…

Profile Information

About Me:
I live in Central Phoenix. I teach middle school: this is my first year teaching science to 7th graders. Last year, I taught writing to them. I love to read, which I had time for when I was a stay-at-home mom for many years (after I quit working as a lawyer. The "lawyering biz" pays better and is easier but teaching is much more important.) I have a husband of 27 yrs, 3 teens, many interests and not enough time. I have 9 hens, 2 parakeets, 1 cat 3 dogs 5 AZ desert tortises 2 African desert tortises, 1 bunny, and board 3 horses with a friend. I don't garden at present because I hate veggies (veggies are what food eats) and my attempts to understand how to do it in this dessert have failed so far.

Hi, LeAnn:
Sorry about the repeats, my machine did that without my permission. I mixed you up with Liz, who also lives close to 7th St & Glendale, and I am making a delivery to her tomorrow mid-late morning Jan. 7, of 2 buckets of coffee grounds and maybe a bag or so of pecan leaves. If you would like some, I now have enough and would be happy to swing by. Let me know. nanmar@cox.net, or (602) 248-7810. Nancy
