thanks for the input Chris- the broody is at the top of the pecking order, and she can normally be aggressive. (so right now she is REALLY aggressive!) the other gals are pretty flighty and aloof (Wyandottes) but I have divided my coop before with…

a lot of times companies will post up their pallets on craigslist under the 'free' section as well- if they aren't available for you to ask, it might be possible that they have an ad!

awesome info- I love learning about this stuff! thanks everyone for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience. I don't have a rooster, so none of the eggs she is sitting on are fertile...but as Rachel said I'd like to try and keep it a…

thanks you guys for all the input- my GLW keeps laying eggs in the same nest box so at times there are multiple eggs under her- not any of her own though because as she was going broody she only laid 2 eggs per week, and I had collected them before…

I agree with Rachel. It's best to let a hen be broody a few weeks before giving her chicks. There is "sitting cycle" she has to go through before she's ready to raise chicks. Why don't you put some golf balls or something under her and if she's stil…

Putting chicks underneath a broody is always risky, and if you were going to try it I'd wait another week anyway for two reasons. One is that the temps are supposed to get back up to about 110 in a couple of days, so that would be extra stress on th…

So my Buff Orpington has gone SO broody that I literally have to give her the boot from the nest box- and she pecks at me and fights every step of the way. She's been broody for about a week now, and I thought about trying to break her, but time out…

About Me:
Sustainably-minded Architect originally from Texas and trying to learn how to garden correctly in the desert climate! Been in AZ for nearly 5 years and I need to get busy!
here's a house update- I moved in over 4th of july weekend (nice and cool LOL) and I've been busy at work ever since- this house needs a TON of TLC...and so I'm trying to make progress and wishing I could be a bit like Mary Poppins and snap my fingers at a few things to get the ball rolling faster... BUT I'm loving the process and watching things change from when I moved in until now. i posted up some of the "before" photos and hopefully sometime this spring I'll have a few "progress" shots to add to the album.

Hi Kristin,
I've been wondering how your renovation project has been coming along since you got the leaky pipe repaired. :)

Thanks Kristin. It keeps me out of trouble. I've been involved in Agriculture my whole life. I've raised rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys, lambs, beef cattle, horses, dogs, cats, cavies, finches to Cockatoos... lots of things :) I always try and grow from home and the best thing I think anyone can do is try to buy local if they can't grown their own. I believe in hunting and fishing (even if it's for a sport) provided the meat is used or donated to good use and we are proud to help contribute to conservation efforts of big cats around the world (especially in Central America) :)
