What's wrong with my tomato plants?

I don't think the problem was mites, although I guess they could be there among the aphids. The little buggers were pretty good sized and not hard to see. I'm sure you are right about the mixed bag o…

Thank you so much for the tomato problem web site. I checked it out but didn't see anything that exactly matched my problem, close but "no cigar" :) I haven't seen any bugs since I, out of desperation, sprayed them with sevin when nothing else worke…

Thank you for the web site Jennifer. My dad used to grow beefsteak tomatoes and some of them would grow in odd shapes also. I think it is the nature of tomatoes that grow to a large size. I probably won't grow this variety next year. It won't hurt t…

Dianne, I have been seeing the same symptoms in some of my tomato plants as well as my pepper plants. I am still not sure what is causing it, but since it seems to be occurring on some plants and not others, as well as some parts of a plant and not…

I don't know what may be wrong with your plants, but I suspect from the fact that only one variety is affected and the yellowing leaves, that some nutritional need is not being met---If they were in my garden, I would try an iron/sulphur additive an…

I think my biggest problem is that there are 5 vines. Maybe I'll dig up 3 or 4 and leave 1 or 2. I can't believe how fast they're growing, it's like feet a day plus the sides shoots that are starting to appear. They seem to be attracted to my pepper…

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for the heads up. I did go out and pinch the tips to keep them from growing longer and thinned the gourds so the ones left would get bigger but never thought about the roots. Who in their right mind would send mystery s…

No reason to pull them up by the roots, when the vine is done, cut it off at the ground.

oh yeah, its a birdhouse gourd. It WILL take over your whole backyard. the roots go DEEP and are a b*tch to get up, even with moistened ground. we had one once, about 2-3 yrs ago. if you want to keep your apple tree, I'd pull them up. we had ours on…

Thank you Rachel!! I never thought about that possibility. Thought squash, melon, ? It's funny that it is a gourd. I had wanted to try growing some bird house size gourds for a few years but never made room for them and now I have them by accident.…

It's a gourd. My guess from the female blossoms is that it's a birdhouse gourd or something similar. :)

Thank you for the link Ericka. I did take a look at the video and believe my Redflame grapes need to be cane pruned. I kinda had in mind last year how I would approach pruning this winter but sometimes best laid plans don't always work out. I love pruning almost anything so I have confidence I won't mess up too bad. Ha ha ha ha. I do know I must feed it when it starts sending out shoots. It must have grown to 8 to 10 times it's size this year plus the bumper crop of grapes so will need the aditional feeding.

I hear that sometimes the second year (if you get fruit the first year) will not be as robust. There is a video that talks about the different pruning for specific grapes. Here is the link. We have 3 grapes first year in and did not get any fruit, and now have to prune as well. We need to look over our notes to see which ones are canes and which are spurs. The videos on fruit tree pruning are great too.
