Does anyone see a problem with one side of my coop being open to the run?

Depends on a lot of things, no picture, description, hard to tell. Having it open on one side is the orginal issue you asked about, if you give some details, then the other question would be a easier to answer.
Chickens for the most part have little in the way of needs, people have many more needs.

Chris is right, depends.
Give photos and more info. Cold is not so much a factor in the PHX area, it is the heat and sun of the summer that is what you need to worry about the most.

I have mine very open. No problems here. It really doesn't get cold enough. I figure if we have an odd week I can bring in the heat lamp, but I haven't had to do that. The heat is always an issue here. I have enough shade and I cover the entire run in shade cloth in the summer.

So it sounds like I should use some topsoil mixed with compost, correct? Since I'm not digging anything out, I don't have extra soil. I know that I can get topsoil from a landscape supplier like Pioneer.
