I LOVE beets! I love to grow them, look at them, anticipate their flavor and eat them any way I can get them. I would love to know who loves beets and who hates them. Do you have a favorite beet story? Do you grow them? Are your family and friends appalled?
I will try to take some pictures of my Detroit Dark Reds that are looking mighty nice if I do say!

I love beets and so does my iguana. He gets the juice on his lips and looks like he's wearing sloppy lipstick--it's too funny! I also use the greens to make a green drink in the blender.

I also use my beet tops for morning green smoothies! A typical recipe might go something like this:
A few hunks frozen banana
A handful frozen strawberries or blueberries
Flax meal
Almond Milk
Cocoa Powder
5-6 nice chard or beet greens
I feel like I'm eating ice cream for breakfast AND it's good for you!

Funny beet stories are also welcome. Like a co-worker who went to the doctor because he thought he had blood in his urine. He forgot that he had eaten lots of beets a few days prior.
And yes Don! Beets are very good for digestion among other things.
Here's my beet and chard bed as of late yesterday.

I like both the tops and bottoms of fresh beets, the tops in the store are nasty. The greens I like best steamed and some times they are good to do a pan wilt with them for a different flavor.
The bottoms are best eaten just about any way you can cook them. My favorites are roasting them, then boiling them and pan frying is very good also. The roasting is one of the best however, they come out sweet, tender and full of intense flavor.

Hi Chris,
I usually boil mine to death. It takes about 45 minutes to get them tender. How do you roast yours? I need to try this, maybe mixing with other hard winter veges.
I'm thinking peel them, drizzle with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper? 425 degrees turning a few times until done?
Dill is also fabulous with beets!

Peel them or don't, I do not peel my beets. Lower the temp to 350 and the rest is fine. They will develop a kind of little bit shrunking look but they stay very juicy and wonderful flavor.

FYI, I think Ryan called about the fish at AZ Game & Fish and they do not give these fish out. We got ours from the "pond lady"
