I have the opportunity to purchase 200 used burlap coffee bags. I was thinking that since I only want 40 (20 for this season, 20 for next season) if I could sell the remaining bags to recover my cost (the bags are 75 cents each plus tax - amount yet unkown) this could be a win-win situation. I need to "partner up" with someone who owns a large pick-up (or equivalent) as the bags weigh 450 lbs. I live in Chandler, the bags are in Phoenix. I would exchange 'free' bags in return for your time and use of your truck. Please let me know if you can either assist or would like to buy bags.  The bags are 26" X 44 " and ideally you could come pick them up. Thanks and happy gardening!!

I would be interested in 20, probably 40 if I can determine the storage. Don't have a truck but our friend who lives in Chandler lets us borrow sometimes for garden related hauls :) It is one of the smaller bed trucks and I can't quite wrap my head around how much 450 lbs. is and if you can put that much into the smaller bed, and what 200 coffee bags look like!
When would they need to be picked up by?

Hi Ericka:

They told me the pile of bags is 2' X 4' X 3'. I'm hoping to pick them up this coming week if I can get enough positive responses. They are open from 7AM to 4PM Monday thru Friday. Will this work for you and your truck friend??

Thanks!

Dave

I know all day Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon is no good.
Wed. or Friday are looking best.
Can I get back on this with you tomorrow? Need to coordinate some schedules.
Any day looking best for you?

Hey David,
Truck is unavailable but we do have an SUV which should work. However, this week will not work after all. Looks like you still need a few more takers on this so perhaps next week will work out better all around. I will follow this post and KIT.
Thanks! Ericka

Ericka:

As long as the interior of the SUV is large enough to accommodate a bale 24" X 48" X 36" we should be okay. Please talk to the SUV owner and see if you can get the interior dimensions.
I might just buy the bags on faith and hopefully good things will happen (eventually). So should we confirm a February 10th date??

Thanks!!

Dave

450 lbs. is easy for any pickup big or small. It is a load for almost all of the SUV's on the market, they are not really made to haul anything except a bit of luggage. While a person can haul a bale this size in an SUV most likely the bale will have to be broken down to be placed into the SUV. I would think they are going to be on a pallet and their desire would be to just place the pallet with a fork lift into the back of a pickup. Not something easy to do with and SUV without some damage.

Thanks for your insightful response. I was thinking along the same lines and agree a pick-up would be MUCH easier. I guess if worse comes to worse, we could take them off the pallet and load them 20 or 30 or so at a time into the back of the SUV.

Thanks again!!

Dave,
It really shouldn't take to long if you have to do it that way and in an SUV would allow you to spread the load a bit to make it safer to drive.
Your welcome!
Chris

These should work great for what you are thinking!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm the kind of guy who would grow tomatoes just for the wonderful smell of the leaves alone. If I actually get to eat any tomatoes, its a bonus!
I just read Charles Wilber's book, "How to Grow World Record Tomatoes, - A Guiness Champion Reveals His All-Organic Techniques" so I'm pretty fired up.

Do you grow tomatoes??

Thanks!!

Dave

Yes, I am working at growing them year round here. I think the key will be in the right variety at the right time of year. If they can grow them in the Jouquin Valley of California in the quanity they do growing a few here should not be that hard to do!

I am going to be teaching a class on growing tomatoes in pots for the person without a garden or someone that just wants to grow them in pots, they do well in pots if treated properly. Not sure when yet.

The photo is one of my current tomatoes.

Wow!! Great picture - thanks for sharing! Please let me know when you offer your class so I can sign-up. What varieties do you think do well here?

Hi all- I would like to order some Cornish X next week, but would prefer to have my mother in law raise them in Prescott rather than in Phx.  Anyone know how Cornish X will do in cooler weather up in Prescott?    Jay
