Event Description

Building a Biodynamic Compost Heap with Maya Dailey
HANDS-ON, Limit 15 people
Suggested donation $20

Come down to the Farm at South Mountain and assist Maya in building a biodynamic compost heap. Biodynamics seeks to capture the "life force" in plant matter and, through specific mixing and building techniques, enhance that energy and return it to the soil.

General definition of Biodynamics:
Biodynamic agriculture conceives of the farm as an organism, a self-contained entity with its own individuality. Emphasis is placed on the integration of crops and livestock, recycling of nutrients, maintenance of soil, and the health and well being of crops and animals; the farmer too is part of the whole. Cover crops, green manures and crop rotations are used extensively. The approach also attempts to consider celestial influences on soil and plant development and to revitalize the farm, its products, and its inhabitants. Many biodynamic farmers are guided by a calendar indicating favorable times to plant, weed, etc based upon the energy of planetary motions.

Wow! I had an AMAZING time at Maya's this past weekend. If I wasn't so cold from the sudden rain fall and starving from the pathetic breakfast I had I would have stayed all day! The people were all great! Hope to meet up with you all again in the near future!
